Handpicked is popping up at Sydney Contemporary Art Festival in collaboration with Karen Black.
Handpicked Wines and Karen Black bring you the official Sydney Contemporary Art Bar - an experiential 'art meets wine' art installation and bar.
Located in Bay 17, expect an immersive space where you can relax and socialise amongst Black's work, while enjoying a range of carefully curated Australian wines. Artist talks and winemaker classes will complement a menu of curated Handpicked Wines and cheese. This is one space where drinking and sitting on the art is strongly encouraged.
Meet the Maker: Art and Wine talks daily from 3pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Handpicked winemaker Jonathon Mattick and Karen Black.

Who is Karen Black?
"There is a sense of theatricality to the way in which my work often plays with the line between figuration and abstraction. For The Handpicked Wine Bar I’m exploring this relationship at a larger scale in an immersive environment in which the viewer is invited to play a part within an enveloping painterly abstraction; I play The Abstract and you become The Figure – that is your role. It’s given me an opportunity to reveal my process and I encourage you to get comfortable and engage with the work.
Black is represented by Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney & Singapore and Sutton Gallery, Melbourne."
Karen Black’s paintings and ceramics explore loaded social and individual narratives that blend the historical with the mythical, traversing the complex interchange between the personal and the political.
Black's recognisable oil on marine ply paintings hover somewhere between figuration and abstraction. Swathes of vivid colour surround obscured figures veiled in drips and splashes of paint. Black was the recipient of an Artspace Studio Residency in Sydney (2017) and a finalist in the 2018 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize. Her work can be found in the collections of National Gallery of Victoria, Monash University Museum of Art, Griffith University Art Museum, Australian War Memorial, QUT Art Museum, Artbank and Salsali Muesum, Dubai.
Black is represented by Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney & Singapore and Sutton Gallery, Melbourne.
