Sydney Contemporary is back! From September 12 to September 16, the renowned art fair will feature a huge program of performances, exhibitions, tours, talks and openings. Clear your schedules and prep your weekend to include a visit to the best art in Sydney. Our belief is that wine is a natural accompaniment to arts and culture, which is why Handpicked Wines is the proud wine partner of Sydney Contemporary. We have curated a wine menu for the festival, and you can find us across the 6 bars within Sydney Contemporary. Be sure to visit our Handpicked ‘art bar’ and prepare your toughest wine questions for our winemaker Jonathon who will be onsite from Friday-Sunday in the afternoons. Here are our recommendations for what to see:
Opening night feat. Sydney Dance Company & Mel O'Callaghan
Start off your Sydney Contemporary 2018 journey with a bang! One of the most anticipated events on Sydney's cultural calendar is indeed the official Opening Night party. A collaboration between the Sydney Dance Company and visual artist Mel O'Callaghan will lead the program. For one glorious evening, immerse yourself in a world made entirely of art, music, wine and food. Some of Sydney's most exciting performers tantalise visitors' senses and take them on an exciting journey throughout the fair.
OPENING NIGHT HOURS
Thursday 13 September, 5pm - 9pm
Patricia Piccinini ‘The Field’
"What is natural and what is artificial? What does it mean when we change nature? - Patricia Piccinini
The 3,000 genetically modified flowers called 'The Field ' is a multisensory installation developed for Piccinini's amazing survey show at GOMA. Great news, it will be exclusively re-imagined for Sydney Contemporary in the Elston Room at Carriageworks. Don't miss out - this will be the first time this work will be seen outside of a museum and will give you the chance to immerse yourself inside the fantastic world of one of Australia’s best-known artists. We don’t want to spoil the surprise but this is going to be incredible.
Art Walks and Talks
Carriageworks has become over the year a playground for art lovers with Sydney Contemporary Sydney art fair and festival featuring talks, performances and installations.
On Friday-Sunday from 3PM to 4PM, join Karen Black in conversation at the Handpicked Art Bar. The conversation will be followed by a wine class with Handpicked winemaker Jonathan Mattick. Don’t hold back, we are ready to answer all your questions!
A Fair restaurant
This year, Sydney Contemporary have teamed up with Merivale and the Made by Merivale team. Made by Merivale will be presenting a pop up of their Work in Progress restaurant and bar, a dim sum restaurant led by revered dumpling master Eric Koh of Mr. Wong and Queen Chow.
There’s always time for a glass of wine...
